The Golden rule of the Pot luck

Dr. Stefano Bertozzi started out taking about sin and I wondered if this was just going to lead into another sermon that I could ask the priest at my church for any time. He uses sin to describe our actions. Like he sinned against the people in the African Sahel and in Bangladesh by flying to the ceremony to give the talk. By flying, he put 600 pounds of CO2 into the air. He said these people that suffer the most every time someone takes and takes, but never gives back. He presented the rule of the pot luck. If you bring 2 people to the pot luck, you bring enough food to feed two people. It's not right if you bring 6 people to the potluck and only bring enough food for one or two. If you take from the planet, you have to give back. Now jsut giving back exactly what you took, but more than that. The most blessed people in this world are the people that take very little and yet still give back even more than they took. These people are the people the world needs so desperately. I feel that "giving more than you take" is the main message of this speech.

My summer Vacation

What I did for the first few weeks of summer besides work (life guarding) is posted on this posting...

Then I saw Ringo Starr and his All Starr band in concert on July 9 (2 days after his b-day and the same night as my friend's big party) Ringo Starr obviously the drummer of the Beatles, Gregg Rolie lead vocals from Santana, Steve Lukather  lead guitarist from Toto, Todd Rundgren, and Richard Page the lead singer of Mr. Mister. The concert was delayed an hour and 45 minutes due to rain!!! In New Mexico!!! Below left is the Poster for the Concert as seen around the city. I got this online. And below right is me standing next to a poster for his art. I was standing in line for the T-shirt.

Cars

For my friends and family that I have told, cars have become my new passion. And for my friends and family that I haven't told: you just found out. I am in love with classic muscle cars. Most people today don't know what a muscle car is. The people my parent's and grandparents ages know what a muscle car is. They don't need an explanation. For my modern friends, a muscle car is a sporty sort of American made car with a big engine that produces lots of horsepower, resulting in a high performance car. I saw my first episode of the Monkees about two years ago. Besides the hilarious story line and the good music, I noticed the car.

Isn't it gorgeous?!!?!?!!?!?!? Well... I did some research and found out that the Monkeemobile is based of the 1966 Pontiac GTO. That Monkeemobile is gonna be my car someday...

I love the '66 GTO. Ronnie and the Daytonas sang "Little GTO." And that is how I fell in love with muscle cars. Especially those V8 engines and their rumble!!!!!!!!!

What I do with my summer

Finals are done for this year. And summer is finally here! I know that most people are excited to sleep more and possibly work, but this is what I've done with the first few days of summer.

And I realize now that i misspelled "gentlemen"

Uses for parabolas

Well. I think that there are many uses for parabolas. Not just as trick questions on a test, but more legitimate, real life experiences. For instance, did you know that every time a dancer jumps, a parabola is made? They start on the floor, take off, sail through the air and come back down . If you could find the apogee of the jump and any point on the line if the jump, you would be able to determine the shape of the parabola and weather it was a vertical shrink or stretch. The higher the jump, the shorter the length of the parabola would be. If the center of the stage is (0,0) and a vertical and horizontal lines are "drawn" to form the Cartesian plane, the dancer(f(x)) leaps  two feet to the left of center, but still on that horizontal line, by accident, the equation of the dancer's jump would be dependent on the height, but the function form of the jump is f(x)= (x-2)2. 

                                      

Parabolas are in all sports. Everyone knows that the person jumping, diving or falling is making an arc, but only smart math geeks like us recognize that it isn't just arcs that are made, but  negative parabolas (concave down). 

Recycled fashion show

Every year Academy put on a "Trashion Fashion" Show. This is to show that fashion doesn't have to be just store bought items. Kids and adults alike make functional items, art pieces and clothing from recycled materials. This year i made three...well actually 5 items.

I made a dress and purse solely from playing cards tied together by yarn.

I also made wedges from my sister's old swimsuits, used firewood, the inserts to a pair of pointe shoes and extra plastic sewing mesh.

I made a 60's style dress based on the Monkees Video of "Cuddly toy" from an old sweatshirt and pop tabs for Sara. This is my favorite.

Then I made a flapper dress for my friend Molly from an old tee shirt and toilet paper tubes.

Aren't they cool?!?!?!?!

I also got First Place ($100) for my playing card dress.
